Review: Derma-rolling (aka micro-needling)

I’m all for trying out new things in the hopes that I’ll find something that really works for me, especially things that are said to make my skin glow and give me clear complexion! So, after seeing/hearing people rave about the effects of derma-rolling, I decided to give the at home procedure a shot!

Here’s my thoughts…

I am very lazy when it comes to my skin care routine. Actually, to be perfectly honest I don’t have a skin care routine! So when I was reading about derma-rolling, one thing that made the treatment super attractive to me was that it only needs to be done once or twice a month to see results!

After some research into needle size and brands, I ordered myself a 0.5mm derma-roller from Amazon (which cost me only £3!).

You can find more expensive derma-rollers but in my opinion it doesn’t matter how much you spend, they all do the same thing! However, it is definitely worth investing in a good serum to use after you’ve finished rolling your face, as the absorption of skincare products increases by up to 90% (due to the micro-injuries caused by the needles). I’m not going to recommend one here as I actually haven’t found one I totally love yet (if you have any recommendations please share in the comments section😘).

The day after using my roller for the first time, my skin was sooooo plump and my makeup went on like a dream! So, I wanted to share my experience with you guys just in case you haven’t yet heard of it or are just a little sceptical about it!

How does it work?

*Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional, so please do your research before attempting derma-rolling yourself.

The roller is covered in tiny titanium needles that help your body to produce more collagen when rolled over your skin. The needles create micro-injuries on the skin, which in turn sends collagen and elastin production into overdrive, making your complexion tighter and plumper!

What are the benefits?

When used often and with a good serum, derma-rolling has soooo many benefits. Here’s a few:

  • Reduction in fine lines and wrinkles
  • Helps to prevent wrinkles
  • Reduces acne scars
  • Smoother skin
  • Reduces stretch marks
  • Boosts collagen production (keeps you looking young!)

Does it hurt?

It sounds painful, right? But it’s really not that bad! Obviously, it depends on your pain tolerance and how sensitive your skin is, but I actually like the feeling! Is that weird?🤔

The at-home method just penetrates the first layer of your skin so it may feel a little stingy but as long as your not pressing too hard (which you shouldn’t) it doesn’t feel too uncomfortable. Just be sure to take extra care around your eyes!

The step-by-step process…

Step One:

Make sure you always start with a very clean face (I usually use my derma-roller after I shower). Wash your face and make sure there are no traces of make-up and then soak a cotton pad in surgical alcohol and rub it all over your face (avoiding eyes… obv).

Step Two:

This step is super important! Disinfect your derma-roller head with surgical alcohol (a spray bottle makes this job easier) and then wash off with boiling water.

Step Three:

Time to roll! You can either roll in small sections (an inch at a time) or larger sections (the whole cheek/forehead). Applying mild to medium pressure, roll over each section 10 times vertically, horizontally and then diagonally. Try to keep the pressure the same throughout and be sure to get every little bit of your skins surface. Give problem areas such as eyes and mouth extra attention.

Step Four:

Once you’re finished rolling, apply your favourite serum. Like I said before, it really is worth spending a lil extra to get a good one!

Step Five:

And finally… resanitize your derma-roller and place back in its container!

Your face may be quite red after rolling (some people also bleed a little but I never have) so I wouldn’t recommend doing this in the morning or before a night out!

Top tip: after rolling the derma-roller over your lips use a lip plumping product (or cayenne pepper mixed with a little olive oil) to really plump up your lips. Sometimes, before I do my make-up for a night out, I will use the roller just over my lips and add a touch of cayenne pepper to make them tingly and plump!

I HIGHLY recommend adding this treatment to your skincare routine. The best part is that it is super affordable and you only have to use it once or twice a month to see results. I have now been using my derma-roller 2 to 3 times a week for just over a month (I only use it this much because I love the way my skin feels the next day and I kinda like the way it feels when I’m doing it🙈😂). My skin is softer than it’s ever been AND I haven’t had any breakouts since using the roller!

I am actually very curious to see how much better (if at all) a 1mm derma-roller is, so I just ordered myself one. I’ll keep you posted!🤣
